Navigational highlights for sailing to Jersey

Sailing Cruise from Northern Brittany: Heading to Jersey.

In Northern Brittany, the tides set the rhythm for departures and arrivals at sea. During your crossing to the Channel Islands, you’ll benefit from favorable currents but may also need to navigate against them at times. While this has minimal impact in open waters, it’s essential to remain alert as you approach the islands: pay attention to the currents and the lee of Jersey Island to adjust your course accordingly.

Sail Through the Saint-Brieuc Bay Offshore Wind Farm.

Departing from Port d’Armor, your sailing cruise will take you near the impressive Saint-Brieuc Bay Offshore Wind Farm, a striking sight. With turbines towering at 210 meters, they create a mechanical ballet in the heart of the sea. Since July 2024, sailing through the wind farm is permitted, provided you follow the established navigation regulations. If the weather conditions are favorable, you might even weave between these giants of the sea, offering a unique experience in open waters.

An unforgettable stop at the Minquiers plateau.

If weather conditions are favorable, take advantage of a stop at the Minquiers Plateau, a unique and pristine location on your way to or from the Channel Islands. This uninhabited archipelago, situated between Northern Brittany and the Channel Islands, offers a true escape from time. On the main islet, discover a house maintained by the locals of Jersey. It’s the perfect place to disconnect, explore the surroundings on foot, or try your hand at fishing, whether wading or with a rod.

Where to Spend the Night in Jersey?

Gorey Anchorage: Mooring at the Foot of Mont Orgueil Castle.

If you’ve rented a twin-keel, full keel, or fin keel sailboat, on a calm day, you can easily experience the unique opportunity of anchoring at Gorey Harbour, right at the foot of the iconic Mont Orgueil Castle. Several yellow mooring buoys are available at the harbour entrance, near the pier, making it a charming and tranquil spot to enjoy Jersey’s coastline.

Saint-Hélier Marina.

This marina is beautiful and highly sought after during the summer months. It has two docks dedicated to visitors, and it is often said that during peak season, sailors must cross from one pontoon to another by stepping over boats tied together. Myth or reality? Regardless, the opening times of the threshold are always an animated moment. The marina is well-equipped, with Wi-Fi, sanitary facilities, laundry machines, and just a 5-minute walk from downtown Saint-Hélier. If you arrive at low tide and the threshold is closed, a waiting pontoon at the entrance will welcome you. You can also check out the Saint-Hélier Marina’s rates.

Saint-Brelade Bay.

Located south of Jersey and west of Saint-Hélier Marina, Saint-Brelade Bay is a beautiful, wide bay perfect for mooring. Surrounded by impressive villas straight out of a Bond villain’s lair, you can anchor here sheltered from northern, eastern, and western winds, all while enjoying the spectacular views without the cost of staying at the marina for the night. However, keep in mind that the tide can bring in some rolling swell.

Saint-Aubin Bay and its Fort: An Authentic Stopover in Jersey.

The Fort of Saint-Aubin offers a wonderful alternative to the Saint-Hélier Marina. Sheltered from winds ranging from north to southwest, this stopover is perfect for those seeking authenticity. It’s an ideal destination for sailors looking for a different experience, far from the bustle of larger marinas.

This quaint fishing village, nestled at one end of the bay, charms visitors with its peaceful atmosphere and spectacular panoramic views. The majestic view of Fort Saint-Aubin, particularly at sunset, invites contemplation and tranquility.

Tips for anchoring at the foot of the Fort

  • The seabed is flat and provides good holding, ensuring stability for most boats.
  • Some mooring buoys may obstruct your positioning, so be mindful when choosing your spot.
  • With light swell at low tide, your boat may lightly tap the seabed if you stay too close to the fort’s base.
